Fortnite’s next season arrives tomorrow, but if you’re on iOS or macOS, you won’t be able to play it, Epic announced today. And Fortnite on iOS and Mac will lose cross-play with other.
The #FreeFortnite campaign continues onward as Epic Games has announced the latest victim of the ongoing issues between it and Apple. We are sad to announce that the Fortnite Season 4 iOS release has been affected by the current battle between the two companies, and it doesn’t look good.
If you are a battle royale player on iPhone, iPad, and so on, we are unfortunately here to tell you that the Fortnite season iOS release isn’t happening at all. Or, at the very least, it won’t be happening anytime soon, so players on those platforms will not have access to the new season.
This announcement was shared as an update today on the Free Fortnite post that Epic Games posted on the official blog. It was updated today to let players know that Apple is blocking any updates for Fortnite battle royale, so players cannot download any new patches.
Without the ability to download new patches, there is no way for the community on the mobile platform to download the Fortnite Season 4 iOS update when it is supposed to launch tomorrow, Aug. 27, for all of the other systems consoles.
Apple blocking new updates for the battle royale game is in addition to what has already been done, like blocking new installs on the App Store for users who don’t already have the game on their iPhone or iPad. Furthermore, Apple is ensuring that it doesn’t stop there either.
Season 4 Isn’t Coming to Mac Either
The company behind the iOS platform has revealed that it will stop Epic Games from developing Fortnite or any other game, app, service, and so on for Apple devices, so this also means that some other players will be caught in the crossfire of this legal battle.
Not only will the Fortnite Season 4 iOS version not happen tomorrow or likely anytime soon, but the Mac version will be disrupted as well. If you play on the Mac version of Fortnite battle royale, you will not play the new season on that device when it launches tomorrow.
Yes, the Mac version technically has nothing to do with the iPhone or iPad version of the game, but this is the case since Apple is likely not letting the Fortnite developer update the game on that platform either. It is a rather sucky situation, especially as Season 4 is looking to be excellent in all honesty.
We know about Fortnite Season 4 currently because it will have a heavy superhero theme, similar to the original Season 4 in Chapter 1, and that it is likely a very Marvel season. Epic Games has been teasing the new season all week long in the lead up to it with comic book pages that players can get.
These comics tell some original stories that include Thor, Galactus, and even Fortnite main characters. Thor’s hammer appeared in the game, causing a crater near Salty Springs, where no one is currently able to pick it up.
It is increasingly likely that Thor will be the premium battle pass skin for the new season, but others are likely coming due to leaks and rumors. Overall, this season looks to potentially be the best one yet, especially when coupled with the cars and other features introduced in the game in Season 3.
But at the end of the day, not all hope is lost for the players who use iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac to play Fortnite battle royale. There is still a chance for you to play the new season without potentially waiting months and months to do so.
How To Get Fortnite On Mac
There are a couple of ways that you can do that, and it starts with the other platforms that the game is on. One of the great things about Fortnite is its openness. If you have an account on iOS, it will work on the Android version of the game.

So, you could download the game on Android (just not through the Google Play Store) and play there or on one of the other platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC. But that is assuming that you have access to one of those platforms.
Not everyone does, and it hasn’t been a problem thus far to play Fortnite on just iOS devices alone without having to shell out cash for another system. That said, there are other battle royale games that you could play instead like Call of Duty Mobile and PUBG Mobile.
We know that none of those are Fortnite Season 4, so we are happy to reveal that you can play the new season tomorrow when it launches on iOS or Mac without having to resort to another platform. There are two main ways that you can do this.
The first is by downloading the Rainway service app. This is a free app that allows you to connect to your Epic Games account and play Fortnite on your mobile device. Unfortunately, you may need to have access for a moment on PC to download the game as you are just streaming your existing PC games.
That said, the other option that will work no matter what is Shadow. It is also available on iOS and Mac and gives you an entire Windows PC all your own to use and stream. You can do anything on there that you could on a normal computer, including downloading Fortnite.
Keep in mind, though, that you will be playing with the PC community, so this could change your experience significantly when playing online. That said, there are touch controls and controllers available (if you already own one) through Shadow, but the one catch is you have to pay monthly for this PC streaming service, unlike Rainway.

When Apple yanked 'Fortnite' from the App Store on August 13, the move had a ripple effect on the millions of people already playing the game on iPhones and iPads: When the next season launched on August 27, those players would left in the past.
'These are the final days of the entire 'Fortnite' community's ability to play together,' Epic Games said in a blog post in mid August. 'Players on iOS devices will be left behind on Chapter 2 - Season 3 while everyone else jumps into the Chapter 2 - Season 4 launch on August 27.'
In short: When the next season went live, iPhone and iPad players weren't able to move forward or play the next season with their friends on other platforms.
On August 28, the day after the new 'Fortnite' season went live, Apple officially ended Epic's developer contracts. The studio's other games were pulled from the store, and they are also unable to be updated — and iOS version of 'Fornite' will not be updated for the foreseeable future.
'Once Chapter 2 - Season 4 begins, players accessing 'Fortnite' will still be able to play the 13.40 version of 'Fortnite,' according to Epic, 'but will not be able to access any new content or the new Battle Pass. Cosmetic purchases will still work across all platforms.'
There's another option for people who want to play the new season: Since 'Fortnite' enables players to carry over progress between platforms, you could log in through another platform — Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, and even Android — and play the next season there. If and when Apple and Epic resolve their squabble, your progress will presumably carry back to the iPhone and iPad versions of the game.

'Fortnite' was pulled from Apple's App Store and the Google Play store on August 13 following an update issued by Epic that gave users the option to bypass the companies' digital payment systems (seen above).

Instead of buying in-game virtual money (known as V-bucks) through Apple or Google, players could buy it directly from Epic — at a 20% discount, no less. Apple and Google said the update was a terms-of-service violation for any developer with an app on the App Store or Google Play.
'Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services,' Apple said in a statement.
In response, the two main smartphone conglomerates pulled 'Fortnite' from their respective digital storefronts. Epic Games, anticipating as much, filed suits against each company.
Epic had filed for a temporary restraining order against Apple that would've put 'Fortnite' back on the App Store, and enabled Epic to update the game (as well as its other games on the App Store), at least while the legal battle between the two is ongoing.

The request for that temporary restraining order was partially denied in a decision issued late on Monday night, meaning that 'Fortnite' will stay off the App Store.
At the same time, the court did make a decision in Epic's favor, when it blocked Apple from revoking its access to key iPhone and Mac development tools that would've had major implications for any games made with Epic's game creation tools, Unreal Engine. Apple had previously said that Epic's access to its development tools would be revoked as soon as August 28, but is now barred from following through for the time being.

Despite being pulled from Google's official Android storefront, 'Fortnite' players on Android are able to bypass the Play store and download the game directly from Epic.
